چکیده

In this paper, we analytically compare IP versus AAL2/ATM as a transport technology in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), where stringent delay bounds are to be met for both real-time and non real-time traffic. We particularly select voice and Web traffic so as to illustrate our investigation. We show that, for the case of voice traffic, AAL2/ATM has a small advantage over IP, in terms of delay; IP is however more efficient than AAL2/ATM in terms of link utilization, especially for heavy loaded systems. As of data traffic, IP performs best. q 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance analysis of AAL2/ATM in UMTS radio access network

The focus of this paper is the performance of ATM/AAL2 as a transport technology for Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) in UMTS/IMT-2000 setting. In this work, we propose an analytical model for the transparent multiplexing and transport through UTRAN of several voice channels onto a single AAL2/ATM VC. We investigate the queue building up at the AAL2 multiplexer in order to der...

Performance evaluation of the AAL2 protocol within the UTRAN

The AAL2 protocol was chosen as a transport protocol within the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). This protocol handles the radio channels between the mobile terminal and the Radio Network controller (RNC). On radio channels, the time constraints are stringent because of the synchronisation mechanisms at the MAC layer. The AAL2 protocol should guarantee a certain Quality of Service...

Impact of the Timer-CU of the AAL2 Protocol on Traffic Performance within the UTRAN

The UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) is the future network for mobile communication systems. The access network of UMTS is called UTRAN (Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network). Many works focus on the quality of service (QoS) aspects within the UTRAN and the dimensioning aspects of the links between different nodes in the UTRAN. In Release 99 of the 3GPP standard, AAL2/ATM ...

Efficiency Issues in MPLS Transport for the UMTS Access Network

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) offers a simple and flexible transport solution for multiservice networks. Therefore, many UMTS operators are currently considering the use of a MPLS backbone. However, the efficient transport of short voice and data packets in the UMTS access network requires multiplexing and segmentation functions not provided by MPLS. This paper investigates the use of AT...

IP-based transport of voice traffic in the UMTS radio access network: analytical study and empirical validation Transport basé sur IP du trafic voix dans le réseau d’accès radio UMTS: étude analytique et validation empirique

In this paper, we investigate the IP protocol as a transport option for the user traffic in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), where stringent delay bounds are to be met for both real-time and non real-time traffic. We focus on real-time voice traffic and present an analytical model for the multiplexing and transport of voice channels in the UTRAN using IP. The novelty of our mo...
